Reports to: VP, Impact Ratings

Type: Full-time

Location: Remote

What we’re looking for:

Nonprofits, and the millions who donate time and money to support them, seek to change the world for the better — to have an impact. Yet very little information is available on the causal effect nonprofits are actually having on the outcomes of their beneficiaries. In this information vacuum, donors are unable to find the nonprofits that do the most good with their dollars, collectively losing out on thousands or millions of lives that could have been saved or improved.

In 2020, Charity Navigator acquired ratings startup ImpactMatters to launch our first ratings of nonprofit impact. Under the Impact & Results beacon of the Encompass Ratings System, donors can now find estimates of the impact and cost-effectiveness of hundreds of service-delivery charities that are creating real change in areas as diverse as global poverty, homelessness and climate change.

Charity Navigator now seeks a talented analyst to join the Impact Unit. As Impact Analyst, you will expand our impact rating methodology and scale up our impact ratings to reach vastly more nonprofits and cause areas.

In this role, you will:

Develop methodology for impact analysis:

  • Conduct literature reviews on the effectiveness of a wide variety of interventions
  • Manipulate and apply data derived from research studies and third-party datasets
  • Design methodologies for estimating impact and rating the cost-effectiveness of a wide variety of interventions
  • Collaborate with our engineering team to develop the Impact Rating Tool, a portal for collecting nonprofit impact data and producing impact ratings

Produce impact ratings:

  • Meet the Impact Unit’s ratings production targets
  • Perform quality assurance of impact ratings, such as reviewing data submitted by nonprofits
  • Support organizational processes to publish impact ratings on
  • Support user-testing with nonprofits

Contribute to other Impact Unit functions

  • Collaborate with team members to advance the development of the Impact & Results beacon, including expansion of and beyond the ImpactMatters methodology
  • Support efforts to understand and communicate Charity Navigator’s own impact
  • Support product development of the Impact Rating Tool
  • Support the creation of educational material and tools for nonprofits about impact

What you’ll need to succeed in this role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, public policy or other social science
  • Foundational knowledge of research methods and statistics
  • Excellent secondary research skills
  • Excellent analytical reasoning skills, quantitative and qualitative
  • Excellent organization and project management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to self-direct work
  • Ability to quickly and efficiently meet deadlines
  • Adaptability to meet dynamic needs of the Impact Unit
  • English fluency

  • Experience with data analysis and manipulation using spreadsheets and statistical software
  • Passion for social impact
