Development Intern

Charity Navigator is looking for a talented and ambitious intern to join our team. Our interns work closely with staff, assisting with projects and processes that provide them with exposure to all facets of the organization. Our team is currently working remotely to comply with CDC guidelines during the pandemic, and as such, this position will either be fully virtual or partially virtual.

We are currently seeking a Development Intern for the summer that wishes to learn more about nonprofit fundraising in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Main projects of the internship position may include researching prospective grant-awarding programs, auditing and refreshing the knowledge base on our website (viewed 11 million times annually), and culminate with the creation of a fundraising campaign strategy. We purposefully provide flexibility to tailor the experience to each intern’s interests and abilities.


May include some or all of the following depending on the needs of the organization at the time the intern is available: 

  • Foundations & grant acquisition
    • Grant prospect research through Foundation Center
    • Assist with drafting LOIs, emails, and one-pagers to foundations as needed
    • Updating CRM database (Bloomerang) and grants calendar with relevant data
    • Explore & recommend grants management software
  • Donation processing
    • Daily spreadsheet data entry
    • Weekly imports into CRM database
    • Printing and sending of letters [in-person only]
    • Confirm matching gifts through FrontDoor
  • Donor relations and customer service
    • Email monitoring & correspondence
    • Draft new acknowledgement letters
    • Knowledge Base FAQ audit & refresh
  • Campaign creation and strategy
    • Assess past campaigns
    • Propose future campaign theme, content, and design
    • Present mocked up ideas to Charity Navigator staff at the end of internship


  • Interest in the nonprofit sector and fundraising 
  • Positive attitude and the willingness to learn
  • Ability to use Excel, Google Suite programs, and Microsoft Word
  • Be a self-starter, detail oriented, with the ability to take initiative & ownership of assigned work project
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner
  • Attention to detail and well-organized
  • Ability to work independently and within a team


General Requirements: 

  • Able to commute to our Glen Rock office location and/or ability to work remotely 
  • Able to commit around 20-30 hours per week beginning June through August, either with 3 full days (9am-5pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday) or half days daily (2:30-5pm, Monday-Friday).
  • Enrolled in a college or university and able to receive school credit
  • In the NYC Metro/NJ area
  • Passionate about nonprofits and Charity Navigator’s mission
  • Some experience or demonstrated knowledge in the area of the internship position
