Development Associate

Job Summary:

Charity Navigator (CN) seeks a Development Associate with exceptional attention to detail and customer service skills, and a passion for the nonprofit sector.  The Development Associate is part of a small team that is responsible for the strategy and implementation of all fundraising efforts, with a special emphasis on direct response (direct mail and online) as well as midlevel/major donor stewardship and grantwriting.  A successful Development Associate will manage the day-to-day gift services with accuracy and accountability, and provide excellent donor care.


Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Process online and offline donations into donor database through data imports and manual entry.
  • Issue timely, personalized thank you letters and tax receipts; draft tailored gift acknowledgement letters for Giving Season and Spring campaigns; review and refresh email acknowledgement copy at least annually.
  • Coordinate CN’s thank you postcard program.
  • Respond to donor inquiries through all input channels (email, phone, mail).
  • Serve on the 2-person team responsible for regular bank deposits.
  • Monitor charitable solicitation compliance, including day-to-day coordination with third party compliance consultant.
  • Ensure timely response to Giving Basket user inquiries.
  • Create and manage donor FAQ resources and process documentation.
  • Generate recurring and ad hoc reports from donor database(s).
  • Manage inventory of stamps, letterhead, etc.
  • Recommend and/or implement processes to improve data management efficiency and accuracy.
  • Recommend and support website content and features based on frontline feedback from CN’s donors and users.
  • Support fundraising campaign development by participating in strategy planning, copy and design review, and post-campaign debriefs.
  • Provide additional administrative support to CDO, as needed.


Other Responsibilities may include short-term projects to support Development or other organizational initiatives, as determined by and/or with the CDO.


Background and Formal Educational Experience:

  • Bachelors degree minimum
  • Experience with a nonprofit, either professional or volunteer
  • Interest in nonprofit development (fundraising)
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to exceptional customer (donor) service
  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities and deadlines
  • Good judgement and ability to make decisions
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word
  • Experience with donor software packages (preferred but not required)
  • Ability to articulate a compelling reason for giving to Charity Navigator
