Data Science Engineer, Nonprofit Evaluation R&D*

Charity Navigator is America’s foremost evaluator of nonprofits. By recommending nonprofits, we help both donors and the nonprofit sector. We are seeking a passionate coder who isn’t afraid of a little math to help us develop our next-generation methodology. The ideal candidate will be a recent grad or early career professional with a history of audacious projects, an eagerness to learn new skills, and a desire to do good in the world.

The Data Science Engineer will help us build and explore datasets from the web, social media, and public tax records. Working with our Director of Data Science and academic collaborators, s/he will contribute to a series of experiments assessing new predictors of nonprofit success and indicators of performative, financial, and perceptual outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • 80% hands-on data mining and exploration
  • Work with Director of Data Science, leadership, and partners to define experimental goals
  • Collect, clean, and explore publicly available datasets for presentation to senior staff
  • Read statistics method papers and apply them to our data to distill key insights
  • Design validation procedures to measure the effectiveness of new tools

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in quantitative field (comp sci, econ, physics, etc) or equivalent experience
  • Fluency in either Python or R
  • Deep grasp of fundamental ideas in probability
  • Clear understanding of common statistical distributions
  • Ability to analyze the “big O” scaling characteristics of algorithms
  • Experience using relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle
  • Experience with a plotting package (ggplot, bokeh, plotly, etc.)
  • Experience with linear and logistic regression
  • Familiarity with classification algorithms

 

Bonus skills (nice, but not required):

  • Experience with MapReduce
  • Experience using Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Experience with text mining (sentiment analysis, topic models)
  • Experience with unsupervised learning (e.g. K-means or hierarchical clustering)
