Chief Relationship Officer

Job Function:

The Chief Relationship Officer (CRO) oversees engagements with all of Charity Navigator’s audiences - including donors, users, and charities - that are essential to achieving the organization's mission of making impactful philanthropy easier for all. The CRO will drive growth in annual revenue, number of website users and donors, as well as grow and improve relationships within the philanthropic sector. S/he will work closely with the CEO to determine the goals for fundraising, communications and marketing and will be directly responsible for implementing the plans across each fiscal year.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Fundraising
      1. Works with the President & CEO in
        • Developing a comprehensive fundraising plan to increase philanthropic support from an array of individual and foundation sources.
        • Strengthening and growing positive relationships and partnerships with industry leaders, individual donors, corporations, foundations, other potential funders, and the general public.
      2. Strategizes and implements tailored approaches for foundation and major donor support.
      3. Manages and grows team, with responsibilities for campaign management, foundation and major gift acquisition, donor services, database management, gift processing, and revenue reporting.
      4. Works with Senior Development Manager to strategize and execute direct response fundraising campaigns, including online and offline channels for one-time and recurring gifts.  
      5. Manages external vendors and consultants, as needed, including online donation processor(s), lockbox, mailshop, designers, grantwriters, etc.
  • Marketing, Communications & PR
      1. Lead marketing & communications team to grow awareness and use of Charity Navigator as measured by audience growth in numbers and demographics, as well as increased use of ratings in national giving behaviors
      2. Ensures the organization’s mission, products and services are presented positively and powerfully to all
      3. Coordinates initiatives to ensure alignment and effectiveness of communications & PR including social media, email, and any associated agency or vendor management.
      4. Strives to continuously improve Charity Navigator’s market position year over year (users, donors, charities, media and philanthropic sector).
  • Financial Management
      1. Works with the Leadership Team in setting marketing and revenue targets as well as corresponding budgets.
      2. Prudently manages and tracks revenues and expenses related to designated budget to meet agreed upon targets.
  • Organizational Governance
      1. Works with President & CEO and other members of leadership to manage organizational governance and health, in support the organization’s long-term vision.
      2. Mentors and develops junior and mid-level staff and managers to encourage their professional growth and staff retention.
      3. Works with CEO and HR to build and hire a high-performing Development/Marketing team to run all major engagement functions including but not limited to communications, marketing, business development, fundraising, major gifts, grant writing, database management, user engagement, direct mail, direct marketing, social media, and etc..
  • Board Administration and Support
      1. Works with the President & CEO in advising and informing the Board of Directors.
      2. Serves on board committees and presents quarterly board meetings, as required.
  • Other Responsibilities
      1. Any other duties assigned by the President & CEO.

Qualifications:

  • A passion for the mission of Charity Navigator and its core values
  • A minimum of ten years of professional experience with demonstrated success in leading a nonprofit fundraising program and a track record of exceeding ambitious goals in a metrics-driven environment.
  • Digital Marketing experience with demonstrated growth in audiences at a similar type of organization including best practices, technologies (including analytics software, paid advertising such as Google AdWords, SEO page ranking, etc.), and success metrics.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop productive, trust-based relationships across a wide variety of individuals and groups.
  • Experience working directly with Boards of Directors and committees.
  • Demonstrated success in growing revenues for a multi-million-dollar nonprofit, including experience or familiarity with:
    • Building a mid-level pipeline, developing a donor stewardship plan, and making successful major donors asks;
    • Grantwriting and/or grant management;
    • Managing a direct response fundraising program; and
    • Managing online marketing and fundraising.
    • Experience with corporate development is a plus.

  • Proactive Planning/Cross-group Coordination – Proficiency in defining achievable short- and long-term objectives across multiple and possibly competing initiatives
  • Awareness and knowledge of current IT business productivity, communications, CRM and other related systems required
  • Bachelor’s degree required (MBA preferred)
